Capel Curig January 2007

Saturday

View along the coast path on AngleseyThere were ten SMoG members on the trip to Capel Curig, staying in the Tan-Y-Garth Hut. Saturday started drizzly with storng winds - forecast to be 70mph on tops, so two car loads (Vernon, Lucy, Nigel, Dave S, Paul and Ady) set off for Anglesey for some coastal walking from Cemaes to Amlwch (don't even think of trying to pronounce it).

View of the brick works at Porth WenThe walk included great and varied coastal scenery; a stop at the historic old brick works at Porth Wen; a semaphore signal for ships to Liverpool and (at Nigel's insistence) a stop for an afternoon cup of tea at Bull Bay. The walk took approximately 5 hours.

There was something of a monsoon on the drive back with aquaplaning and flooding along the Ogwen Valley.

Simon and Denise mountain biked in the Coed-y-Brenin forest while Shel and Mark ran from the hut up the track to Llyn Foel and Siabod to see how bad the wind was and returned via Clug Glug to go to the cafe.

Sunday

Sunday was great weather with most doing a round of Llyn Colwyd, Crag Eigian, Carnedd Llewelyn, Pen yr Helg Du and Penllithrig y Llrad. Lucy, Vernon and Dave S went on a scrambling round of Moel Siabod.

Ady and Nigel did the Snowden Horseshoe from Pen y Pass, initially up Pyg Track then branching off up Crib Goch and along ridge to Snowdon summit. Conditions were misty with limited views and moderately strong winds. The return was via Lliwedd summit and back to Pen y Pass - 5 hours for the round. They took the Sherpa public bus back to Capel Curig for hot chocolate and carrot cake. As you can see Nigel's walks generally involve stopping for drinks & cakes somewhere. In his words "Rude not to.."
