Rachel goes Rockclimbing - Part II

April 2004

You remember in October 2003 how I was "forced" to go rock climbing because there was nothing else to do? Well I've been again! When camping at the North Lees campsite just 30 mins walk from the bottom of Stanage Edge what else should one do?

After arriving on Friday and having a spot of lunch we decided that since it was fine (not actually raining) we would venture up to the crag to see what was what. As we walked up the hill from the campsite we could see hundreds of little red and white dots in various stages of climbing. The crag sure looked busy. Would we find a suitable place to climb? At this point I discovered that Stanage Edge is actually 5km long so the gaps between the climbers were actually quite large. However, I am sure that it is busier on those sections close to the carparks.

We started the afternoon on Milestone Buttress with a chimney (D). Two weeks later, I still bear the bruises on my knees. Now I know and you know that knee jamming is not the recommended way to to climb a chimney! We followed with a crack further to the left (VD). Twice for fun! Dave then made a gallant attempt at a route with a pocketed start. By this time it was drawing on for 4.30pm and the wind was chill. Time to head back to the campsite for a bite to eat and a nice bottle of wine.

Sunday we climbed a couple of cracks on Paradise Buttress - one starting inside a holly bush (VD, S). On my first attempt I came unstuck and Dave had to lower me - straight into the holly bush (much to the amusement of the other climbers)! Again it was chill in the wind and home seemed like a much warmer and better place to be.

I had come away for the weekend without much climbing gear - in fact - aside from a harness and rock boots I didn't actually own any! I have spent my life borrowing other peoples' gear. This weekend was going to change my life - I finally bought my own helmet and belay device. As you can see they are colour co-ordinated! Now all I need is some skill!

It was an excellent trip and many thanks go to Dave Bloodworth for giving me lots of encouragement.
