A sunny weekend in BorrowdaleFebruary 2004A select group of eight braved the rigours of Bowderstone Hut and the half term traffic to enjoy a fantastic winter weekend in the Lakes. Cold (very cold), but sunny weather. Despite rumours to the contrary, Bowderstone Hut was dry and, eventually with the coal fire burning, warm (or was that the whisky?)! As the skies were so clear we had beautiful sunsets of pink. Over the weekend everybody got out either mountain biking or scrambling or walking. On Saturday we made a tour of Skiddaw by mountain bike, and a walk over Great Gable.
On the slopes of Buttermere Fell This picture was taken on the slopes of Buttermere Fell, looking towards Buttermere and Goat Crag. We started at Gatesgarth Farm, on the edge of Buttermere. From here we went up to Scarth Gap, dropped down through the remains of Ennerdale Forest, then up again onto Pillar. We skirted the tops of Kirk Fell and Great Gable, dropping down through Windy Gap to Sty Head Tarn and back down to Seathwaite. As the picture shows, we had an excellent weekend! Tony Noonan, Dave Simpson, Sarah Canton, Penny Web (& friend), Rob Horner, Andrew Bayly. On Sunday we walked up Scafell Pike. By climbing up past Sprinkling Tarn we gained Esk Hause. From there we wound our windy way to the top. Descending via the Corridor Route to find ourselves back Sty Head Tarn. Other smoggies scrambled on Sour Milk Ghyll and on various buttresses above.
