A Spring Weekend in North Wales

March 2003

Saturday 15th March

The weather forecast promised to us by the meterologists during the week actually turned out to be true! Saturday morning dawned bright sunshine with few clouds.

Time for an epic walk Paul thought to himself - why not an Extended Snowdon Horseshoe. Lets park down by the power station at 100m above sea level, and climb to 1085m via Crib Goch! From all accounts it was a great trip with spectacular weather and even a little snow and ice underfoot to make it even more interesting. As Rob said Crib Goch is still worth doing even though we have been along there many times. It is quite a contrast arriving on the Snowdon summit to the vast crowds. Maybe next time we'll go up in the railway to see what the easy way to the summit is like! Participating in the Extended Snowdon Horseshoe were Rob, Paul, Lucy, Dave S, Dave R, Malcolm, James, and Jose.

The rest of us walkers decided to head over to Carnedd Llwelyn via Y Braich and Pen yr Helg Du. Again some spectacular weather, however there was a very stiff breeze and much snow underfoot on the top. This led to a rather hurried descent down into Cwm Eigiau where there were some very atmospheric views of an old quarry. From Cwm Eigiau we walked down to Llyn Eigiau and then cut over the ridge to Llyn Cowlyd for a relaxed and leisurely stroll back to the car. Did I remember to mention looking up just in time to see Christine disappear from view and a huge peal of laughter from Bob? The North Wales bog monster strikes again! Thanks to Christine, Tony, Bob, Vernon for a great day out.

Other activities on Saturday included a days climbing in Tremadog for Tony, Rich, Geoff, and Nigel. Routes climbed include Poor Man's Peutery and Hogmany Heaven. They all came back with big smiles and great sun tans! Reg walked around Moel Siabod, and Dave and Ceri tackled the Marin Trail - a fantastic bike route set up and maintained by the Forestry Commision near Betws-y-Coed.

Sunday 16th March

Great stuff - another beautiful day in North Wales! You really don't hear those words too often!

Most Smoggies opted for a slightly easier day with a trip up to Llyn Crafnant returning over Craig Wen to the west of the reservoir and down to Capel Curig. The lunch spot was carefully chosen for its beautiful views of Crafnant and Cowlyd. Enjoying this trip were Rob, Jose, Lucy, Vernon, Malcolm, Dave R, Dave S, Paul, and Reg.

Having never been up Moel Siabod, I decided to head up there via Daiar Ddu and returned by dropping off the main ridge into Capel Curig for a very relaxing and pleasant walk back along the river to Tan Y Garth. I would recommend this walk for the amazing views of the whole of North Wales - from the Snowdon Horseshoe, the Glyders with Tryfan behind, over to Craig Wen. Somehow it puts the whole place into perspective. Tony and Christine joined me on this jaunt.

Heading off to Cwm Silyn for more climbing were Nigel, Geoff, James, Tony and Rich. A leisurely ascent of Outside Edge which allegedly involved sunbathing on Sunset Ledge! I didn't realise that climbing was such hard work!

After such a good weekend I think everybody is looking forward to the Easter trip to Scotland!
